S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) is able to prevent cholestasis in liver by using the physiological adenomethionine in normal range. It has been proved that the accumulation of methionine can lead to the increase of the concentration of degradation products (such as mercaptan, methiol) in the blood, which play an important role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy. Because of the increase of the synthesis of mercaptones by adenomethionine, but not the concentration of methionine in blood circulation, adding S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAMe) to patients with cirrhosis can restore the endogenous level of a necessary compound with lower bioavailability in liver disease.
